A Word From Dr. Tim Williams

At the conclusion of work on major construction projects, key participants oftentimes participate in a lessons learned discussion session. The purpose of the sessions is to catalog both the good and the bad with the idea that future projects can benefit from emphasizing the good while avoiding the bad. I have had the enjoyable task, at times, of facilitating some of these sessions. Inevitably one of the participants will emphasize the point that the time we have spent together will be wasted if the product of our discussion is transcribed, put in a drawer and forgotten.

In graduate school, years ago, I took a couple of classes that had the word applied in the title (applied psychology, applied sociology, etc.). My understanding is that the basic difference between a class without the word applied in the title and a class with the word applied is found in the difference between concept and application. In an applied class one focuses on taking concept and turning it into something helpful, something that can be used to make an improvement, bring about a change, and so forth.

This website is all about applied lessons learned for the purpose of achieving a positive workplace. Throughout our lifetime, we all spend an enormous amount of time at work. Why should that time be spent in an environment that is negative, personally destructive and unproductive? More importantly, why would an organization not want to promote a positive, productive workplace?

It is my plan as the website host to regularly provide articles related to the topic of making work a better place to be. You will also find papers written by my graduate students on related topics, material provided by some of my colleagues and, hopefully, material that some of the readers are able to provide. My hope is that you find this web site insightful and, most importantly, useful. How useful, of course, will be determined on an individual basis as the concepts are adapted and applied to each specific situation.
